Aggression: Tachykinin Is All the Rage
نویسندگان
چکیده
Animals are constantly receiving information about their environment that must be filtered to ensure that they respond in the appropriate manner. New data have revealed how neurons in male Drosophila promote a heightened state of aggression in response to a rival male.

Tachykinin Expression Levels Correlate with Caste-Specific Aggression in Workers of the Leaf-Cutting Ant Acromyrmex echinatior
The tachykinins are a family of neuropeptides that influence a range of behavioral phenotypes in both vertebrates and invertebrates; they appear to have a conserved role in the processing of stimuli, and in the control of aggression in a wide range of animals. Expression of tachykinin in a cluster of neurons was recently shown to determine the stimulus response threshold for aggressive behavior...
متن کاملNarcissistic rage revisited.
Narcissists are thought to exhibit "narcissistic rage," an explosive mix of anger and hostility arising from threats to narcissists' fractured sense of self. Building on clinical views of narcissism, we present empirical evidence on the nature and sources of narcissistic rage. Findings from 4 studies reveal narcissistic vulnerability (but not grandiosity) as a powerful driver of rage, hostility...
متن کاملTachykinin-Expressing Neurons Control Male-Specific Aggressive Arousal in Drosophila
Males of most species are more aggressive than females, but the neural mechanisms underlying this dimorphism are not clear. Here, we identify a neuron and a gene that control the higher level of aggression characteristic of Drosophila melanogaster males. Males, but not females, contain a small cluster of FruM(+) neurons that express the neuropeptide tachykinin (Tk). Activation and silencing of ...
متن کاملPost-ictal rage and aggression: a video-EEG study.
Post-ictal rage and aggression have been mentioned in the literature but have rarely been documented by video-EEG recording. We studied a patient with dramatic, episodic, seizure-related rage and violence. This mentally retarded man had a lifelong history of seizures. He developed increasing episodic rage and aggression. Caregivers were afraid of him, although there was no record of directed vi...
متن کاملUnderstanding human aggression: New insights from neuroscience.
The present paper reviews and summarizes the basic findings concerning the nature of the neurobiological and behavioral characteristics of aggression and rage. For heuristic purposes, the types of aggression will be reduced to two categories - defensive rage (affective defense) and predatory attack. This approach helps explain both the behavioral properties of aggression as well as the underlyi...
